Welcome to My Blog - November 15, 2010
Okay, I know many of you are wondering where I've been - haven't seen information from me. Well, here's what has been going on:
1. The first few weeks of school were very hectic for our special education team. We were not staffed well to provide the needed services for our students. After many discussions with central office (who were wonderful!), we received permission to hire a .5 special education teacher and two special education teacher aides. Thus, it took some time to find the quality people we want and expect at Gullett. Now - we welcome Mary Onak, our new half-time special education teacher; Sarah Williams and Bryan Moore, our two new SpEd teacher assistants.
2. Ms. Nikki Murphy, one of our very dear and spectacular teachers, was offered an Assistant Principalship in AISD. She now serves Brykerwoods Elementary and Lee Elementary as a part-time AP at each campus. As we continue to provide quality instruction, I looked to several different certified folks who knew our campus. Morgan Marold is serving as our permanent substitute teacher until May. Ms. Marold was a student teacher for Ms. O'Brien a few years ago and has stepped into her new role stupendously.
3. SPACE! What's there to say? As we added another .5 SpEd teacher and 2 more assistants, we needed another space by which to teach the children. And so the work began - over the course of several days, Ms. Gooch and her mighty, powerful and organized volunteers, cleaned out the "dungeon" (back of the library) and set up a conference room for all of our meetings. Why? We needed a meeting space and had to give our previous conference room away as a new teaching space. In that move, we also had to take all the PTA materials and Gullett "extra" materials out of a closet and move them into a custodial closet. Oh, no! Then we needed to clean out, throw out, reorganize another custodial closet to accommodate all their materials. WOW! Lots of work, but a great big thanks to all who helped us over the course of the three weeks. :)
4. Books, More Books, Cartons, Boxes! With the new reading adoption, there has been a stream of materials arriving almost every day for the last few months. Our textbook room has been cleaned, reorganized, shifted, etc. to accommodate all the new materials. This ALSO goes for our new science materials from the district (not a new adoption, just LOTS of new science tools.)
Now that I've mentioned a few "management" issues, I'll update you (very soon) on other things going on at the campus. Please hold my feet to the fire and make sure I communicate with you guys on a regular basis - it's very important to me! - Sometimes I just need multiple reminders :), and BTW, a special thanks to Andrea Richeson for her continued patience with my technology implementation. Greatly appreciated!!
